Salt is the first fight
Tony’s, rotisserie chicken, and the number on the can.
Why salt matters first
Salt pulls water with it. Tired kidneys cannot push that water out as well, so it sits in your legs, your hands, and sometimes your lungs. Cutting salt is the change that most people feel first — less puffiness, easier blood pressure.
The number to look for
If your doctor gave you a daily limit, use that. Many people are asked to stay near 2,000 milligrams of sodium for the whole day. On a label, under 200 mg a serving is a friendly pick. Over 400 mg in one thing is a lot unless it is the whole meal.
Where Shreveport hides it
The green Tony’s can, seasoning salt, rotisserie chicken, deli meat, canned soup, Cajun mix, bacon, and “flavor injected” chicken at Brookshire’s or Super 1. If the meat says enhanced or injected, that is salt water.
What to use instead
Lemon, garlic, black pepper, paprika, onion powder, and the salt-free Cajun mix on the Around town page. Taste the food, then add more herb — not more salt.
Try this
- Park the salt shaker in a cupboard for a week.
- Buy no-salt-added vegetables and rinse regular cans if that is all Super 1 has.
