What your kidneys actually do
A tired filter, in plain English — and why supper still matters.
Think of a coffee filter
Your kidneys sit in your back, about the size of a fist. All day they strain the blood: they keep what you need, and they send the rest out in urine. When they get tired, some of the leftover from food stays in the blood instead of leaving.
The leftovers that pile up
The four that show up on a kidney diet sheet are salt, potassium, phosphorus, and extra protein. None of them are “poison.” You need some of each. The job is to not dump a whole day’s worth into one plate of gumbo.
This is not a punishment
You are not being sent to a hospital kitchen. You are making the filter’s job lighter so you feel less swollen, less wiped out, and your numbers stay kinder. One good plate does more than a perfect week you cannot keep.
Try this
- Read the four things on Start here once, then cook tonight’s meal from this site.
- You do not have to memorize mineral names. Search the food when you wonder.
