The phosphorus trap
The kind they add to food is worse than the kind in a chicken.
Two kinds
Phosphorus lives naturally in meat, dairy, beans, and nuts. Your body only absorbs some of that. The other kind is added to processed food to keep it moist or fizzy — phosphoric acid, sodium phosphate, anything with “phos” in the name. Your body absorbs almost all of that kind.
Why it matters
Too much can pull calcium from bones and settle in blood vessels. You will not feel it at supper. It shows up later on labs and in bones. This is why cola, processed cheese, and boxed mixes get a red light even when they do not taste “unhealthy.”
The 10-second check
Flip the carton. If the ingredient list has phos, phosphate, or phosphoric, put it back. Fresh chicken, white rice, and olive oil do not need that list.
Try this
- At Walmart or Kroger, flip one carton of almond milk and one can of cola. Practice spotting “phos.”
- Cook from this week’s meals — they skip the additive pile.
